Hobbyist
(C) The First Astounding Science Fiction Anthology, 1964
Rating 3?
The tale of an interstellar explorer who finds a planet on which a nanotechnologist "hobbyist" is assembling crystals, creatures, plants, etc. Though a very old story (first published in the pulp in 1947) it clearly describes the process as building atom by atom. There is no mention of the field of nanotechnology, of course, the term electroponics is used instead.
