EchoNets, E-memes and Extended Realities Scott Guthery, Schlumberger It is often argued that central switches are necessary to support any sort of network-style communication between a large number of people. While it is certainly true that such a switch adds valuable features to network communication in this article we will suggest that useful network communication is possible without a central switch. The switchless network we have in mind called an EchoNet works by relaying messages from one personnal communcation device to the next. Since the owner of a node can decide whether or not to relay a message, we call these messages e-memes. The paper reviews various algorithms for communication on such a network.
