Actually to be fair to those down-under this could be the justification
of the both celebrations.... "maximum tilt day!" sort of a celebration of
angular momentum.

Sure -- the summer solstice is the time of maximum (sun)light, and
so nicely complements the winter celebration of the days starting
to lengthen.
