Fun.  This might even be a meta-layout: vary the iterations according to 
depth of exploration.
Someone mentioned "Black Hole" as a concept.  May I point out that that 
there is a solitaire [possibly of recent origin] called Black Hole, for a 
single deck of playing cards?  [I don't quite recall the rules, alas: 
over a decade since I last saw them....]  The layout works like this: 
Pick a central card, and deal out 17 fans of three cards around the 
central card.
