Not all religions are based around Deity; Buddhism is /very/ close to
your virtualist thoughts. The basic ideas, that this world is an
illusion and that we can `break free' are positively Gnostic in
essence and run through most if not all of the world's religions. Add
to that we can't necessarily know the Beyond and can find no proof of
it by design and you /are/ talking religion.
