virus: George Lakoff lecture

I just attended a talk by Dr. George Lakoff, professor of cognitive
linguistics at UC Berkeley, author of _Women, Fire, and Dangerous
Things_ and co-author of _Metaphors We Live By_ and _More Than Cool
Reason_, all books dealing with the radical differences between
traditional views of metaphor and thought and the ways we in fact think
and speak. Lakoff is also the source for my understanding of the common
conduit metaphor of communication (and its flaws).

I'd like to post here a somewhat tidied-up version of my notes from the
lecture and the question period, as the talk relates to almost everything
we've been talking about here. It will be long, though, and so I will
break it into more digestable chunks (mm, ideas-as-food).
