I buy that. I think "thinking for yourself" is better
translated as "making sure you try to understand what everybody
(subject to your filtering) is trying to say.
In order to do this one way is to translate what you think
they are saying into your own words (using your own mind tools) and
see if it still makes sense to the "author". Really we should loose
none of our self respect, and feel some healthy humility when we
admit that the ultimate "author" of everything is blind chance. (or
as you say trivialy the big bang ;).
