But of course. I'm male, white and over 21, I am for all intents and
purposes The Man, and as such, as long as I avoid the worst parts of
Atlanta (after all, places I'd never be caught /willingly/, unless its
3am and I'm walking alone back to my hotel several blocks during a
Con), I'm the Opressor and not the Opressee.
[Side note: The role of racism in the modern South is exagerated by
nearly every TV show and novel written to date that deals with it;
Atlanta and the other major cities are highly cosmopolitan. Now, out
in the fringes and rural areas, you'll find some rather intense racist
people, but I wouldn't really care to turn over the cultural rocks in
the wilds of Wisconsin and see what scuttles out from underneath, if
you know what I mean.
These days, the black populations are more likely to be overtly racist
in word or deed down here, but you never hear about that, do you?
