Alone where? In the Universe? No. Check out the probability as
posited by Stephen Hawking, and paraphrased by me:
It is believed that there are 100,000,000,000 stars in our galaxy. Of
those, it is likely that around 1 in every 100 has planets orbiting it,
meaning that there are 1,000,000,000 stars with orbiting satelites. Of
those, it seems likely that only about 1 in 1,000 capable of supporting
life, leaving 1,000,000 stable planets in our galaxy. On how many has
life started? Good estimate: 1 in every 10,000. This means that in
our galaxy alone there are 10 planets supporting life at any time in the
existance of the universe, and we're one of them. Now, does anyone know
how many galaxies there are? I can't remember, but I believe that
thousands are observable, so there are tens of thousands of planets in
the universe that have at some point supported life! So how long does
life last? Life on earth has been around for about a billion years, and
is (IMO) in the process of killing itself off! The universe is only 15
billion years old (at last estimate), so it should only take 15
civilisations to mean that there has been life since the very begining
(of course, this is not really pracical), so it would seem likely that
at his precise moment in time, there are several hundred civilisations
that exist in the universe.
